Our mission is: to cultivate a joy of lifelong learning through transformative intellectual, social & emotional growth.

Educational philosophy

Sally was appointed Head of School July 2019. She first joined the Touchstone community as a parent from 1983-2003. Sally returned to TCS as a head teacher and curriculum developer for the Older Student Program from 2006-2012.

Growing up as the daughter of a scientist, she spent her early career in a lab then followed her passion into education. During her teaching career, she taught at the Minuteman Vocational Technical School, the Brandeis Summer Odyssey, Francis Parker Charter School, Christa McAuliffe Charter School, and most recently at Avenues The World School, New York City Campus, where she led the design and development of the international science curriculum for grades K-8 as Associate Head of Administration. Sally returned to Touchstone in 2018/19 as Assistant Head of School.

I have  always considered Touchstone my home and am excited to lead Touchstone through its future in progressive education.

Throughout my career, I have witnessed education systems that foster prioritizing the student’s individual needs over others, but when they become adults and enter the workforce, we expect them to collaborate and care about each other and their communities. An approach to curriculum design that I am especially invested in is design thinking. Through the rigor of empathy and solicitation of feedback, students solve real problems through empathetic understanding the needs of others.  These problems can be rigorous and academically challenging. I believe design thinking is the pathway for both social and environmental sustainability. I also believe the more we can use the design thinking approach in our curriculum and in the school community for problem solving the more skilled and prepared our students will be. This is not just about progressive education, but about leading the way to seeing that every day we are part of a community of learners committed to appreciating one another for what they contribute and to preparing our children for a sustainable future.   With the new norms of today, it is that much more important to give our students the skills and confidence to problem solve.
